During the live broadcast on 27 October, Gijsbert van Heest and Christiaan Cooiman (Heijmans) spoke about the innovative construction, the heritage value and users of the building and its positive impact on the area. These are aspects that have been leading in the selection of the winner of the ULI Europe Awards for Excellence 2020.
The jury states:
‘Fenix I is an exemplary re-development project weaved beautifully into the urban fabric of Rotterdam’s historical waterfront. Built upon a 1922 monumental warehouse, offering amongst others a variety of cultural facilities and office spaces, a large steel framework carries 212 apartments which have been designed following an innovative modular system. The variety in size has facilitated a wide mix of residents, from those who require a 40sqm apartment to those who bought a 300sqm apartment with water view. The inner courtyard and ‘balcony-like’ access to the apartments promotes interaction between residents and creates a feeling of community.’
