Exactly one year ago we surprised the residents of Fenix I with cake, to celebrate the tenth award for Fenix I. The building now counts no less than 20 awards and nominations! We still cannot believe the enormous praise that Fenix I has received from (inter)national media, renowned architecture platforms, experts and users.
Since its completion in 2019, Fenix I has rightly proven itself as a landmark and catalyst for Katendrecht. By using an immense and highly innovative table construction of approximately one million kilos of steel, the historic building could be preserved as much as possible. 212 loft apartments have been realized in the new-build volume on top of the table construction, and space has been made in the historic part for local entrepreneurs, many of whom were already present in the area; Fenix Food Factory, Conny Janssen Danst, Codarts and Circus Rotjeknor. The public passage, which runs straight through the building, is the place where all the different users of the building – neighbors, cultural visitors, residents, passers-by and holidaymakers – come together. Since its completion, a close-knit community of like-minded people has developed, which is exactly what Fenix I was made for.
