Joost Wetzel appointed as associate at Mei architects and planners

Joost Wetzel has been appointed as an Associate at Mei Architects and Planners. Since joining Mei in 2018, Joost has developed into the division leader of ‘Existing & New,’ a division focused on transformation projects. In recent years, he has further expanded his expertise with a focus on biobased and timber construction, as seen in projects like SAWA in Rotterdam.

This combination of specializations offers opportunities for the future of architecture, with sustainability and circularity at its core. Additionally, timber construction aligns perfectly with transformation projects, as the lighter weight of wood facilitates rooftop extensions on existing buildings. This combination paves the way for Paris-proof architecture, a key ambition of Mei.

“Joost zijn jarenlange, internationale ervaring met transformatie in combinatie met zijn vooruitstrevende expertise op biobased bouwen sluit naadloos aan bij de ambities van Mei. Met zijn benoeming tot Associate verstevigen we onze positie op het gebied van duurzame architectuur en carbon based design.”

Joost has already demonstrated the strength of this integrated approach with his contributions to the Gasometer project in Münster, Germany, which won an impressive five awards by the end of 2024. This project—where a former industrial gas holder is being transformed into a green, nature-inclusive mixed-use building—combines the preservation and transformation of a historic landmark with a new volume featuring a primary timber structure.

Joost looks forward to his future at Mei:

“I am proud of this step and excited to continue working with the Mei team on projects that contribute to reducing CO₂ emissions in the construction industry. The combination of timber construction and transformation presents tremendous opportunities to make a real impact.”
